Water Fire
Hudson Strait, Canadian Arctic
The most astonishing sunsets I have ever seen are those reflected in Arctic waters on placid evenings when there is no wind and the seas are calm. As the sun sets it skips across the watery horizon, and the low angled rays touch only the tops of the tiny wavelets. The shallow troughs between the wavelets remain in shadow and reflect the blue of the sky above. The effect is of a richly colored, ever-changing abstract painting.
